According to the 1900 Census of Cumberland, Allegany County, Maryland, Hazel Elizabeth Saunders was listed as Elizabeth H., born in 1890 in Maryland. Her sister, Nellie Saunders, was born in July 1888 in Maryland. Their parents were Joseph C. Saunders (also Sanders), born in Cumberland, Maryland, and Nellie Millman, born in Ohio. The parents were married in Maryland in 1885.

The father died after the 1900 census.

The mother of Hazel and Nellie, Mrs. Nellie Millman Saunders, died in 1942 at Hazel's home.

Hazel Saunders Caro died on December 11, 1962.
