Obituary

On Sun., Feb. 20, 2005. Beloved sister-in-law of Sarah Ruffing. Sister of the late Robert, Francis, Joseph, Albert & Daniel Ruffing, Margaret Bendot, Agnes Mitchell, Helen Jouver, Regina Sherwin. Several nieces and nephews.

Visitation at the MT. ALVERNIA MOTHERHOUSE CHAPEL, 146 Hawthorne Rd., Millvale, Tuesday 2-8pm, Wed. 2pm until time of Funeral Mass at 5pm.

Sr. Mary Daniel began her life as a Millvale Franciscan as a teacher in the junior high school classes and soon transferred to St. Francis General Hospital to serve as admission/discharge officer. After completing studies in nursing, she became head nurse in Medical/Surgical Nursing and later supervisor & instructor in Maternity Nursing. In 1958, Sr. Mary Daniel became Assistant Director and Instructor in the School of Nursing, and served in the position for 20 years. In 1978, she became Assistant Executive Director and later Vice President of Nursing at St. Francis Medical Center. From 1990 until she retired to the Motherhouse in 1999, she served as Senior Vice President.

In addition to St. Francis Medical Center School of Nursing, Sister received her education at Catholic University in Wash., DC, Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI, and Duquesne University in Pgh., PA. She also served on a number of Boards and Committees at St. Francis Hospital.

Devoted to forming leadership among her students, she may be remembered as the most loved nursing educator at St. Francis. May she rest in the peace of Christ.
