Maria (Valone) Romeo, Frankenmuth - Mother and grandmother, nurse and health educator, passed away Sunday, March 21, 2010, age 67 years. Maria Romeo was born on October 31, 1942 in Pittsburgh, PA. Maria was an R.N., graduate of St. Francis School of Nursing, Pittsburg, PA, furthered her education at West Shore Community College, Ludington, MI, Central Michigan University, Mt. Pleasant, MI, and Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI. She was known as an RN, Masters of Education, emphasis area curriculum in education, specialty area health education. Her employment was in Nursing and Education. She retired in Frankenmuth, Michigan after working in long term care in Alzheimer's Units. She taught obstetrical nursing and community health at West Shore Community College, and taught/supervised prospective teachers at Michigan State University, College of Education. She was Director of Health Education in the Manistee Area Public Schools, from 1976 -1982, and wrote grants for the school district in health education, and health service and nutrition. As an administrator, she improved the school district and community's health and nutrition education, and cooperation between the health services, and improvement of community reading. While at Michigan State University College of Education, she expanded her own thesis "Evaluation of Parent Health Education Handbooks and Student Learning", and wrote a "Policy Handbook for Prospective Students in Teacher Education". Maria received Honors in Eta Sigma Gamma, health research, education, service, and Phi Kappa Phi. She was a member of the Frankenmuth United Methodist Church, a Stephens Minister (2001), choir member, Clothesline volunteer, and Senior member participant. She was a member of Frankenmuth American Association of University Women, serving as President in Frankenmuth, Manistee and East Lansing, and Director in Lansing, and Frankenmuth Women's Club. Volunteer at Lorenz C. List School and Wickson Memorial District Library and with Relay For Life. Surviving are two sons and their wives, and four grandchildren; Richard (Elizabeth) Valone Jr., Connor and Lucas Valone of Royal Oak, MI, and Anthony (Luci) Valone, Martha and Michael Valone of Frankenmuth, MI; two sisters, Carol Veits of Bangor, Maine and Helen (Rand) Darrow; nieces, Sarah (Jason) Courtney of Nevada and Gina Veits of Ohio; nephews, Scott Darrow of New York and Alex Darrow of Pennsylvania. Memorial service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 27, 2010 at Frankenmuth United Methodist Church, 346 E. Vates St., Frankenmuth, Rev. David Eardly will officiate. Maria's family will receive visitors at the Cederberg Funeral Home of Frankenmuth, 590 N. Franklin St. on Friday from 3-8 p.m. and at church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
