ALICE G. O'HARA

A news article about the St. Francis graduating Class of 1914 states that this graduate was "Alice G. O'Hara, Homestead, Pa."

In the 1910 Federal Census, Alice O'Hara was Mrs. Alice Hackenberg, 29, married once for 8 years, 2 children/1 living. She had a daughter, Margaret Hackenberg, age 5. The husband, Clement Hackenberg, was not in the home, and subsequent records reveal that they were divorcing.

By the time Alice attended nursing school, she was using her maiden name.

Alice served in the U. S. Army Nurse Corps during World War I. On her application for compensation, dated 1934, she stated she served from October 30, 1918 - December 4, 1919.

The documents indicate that she was born January 14, 1882, in Blossburg, which is in Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Her parents were John C. and Cathrine (Tierney) O'Hara.

Clement Hackenberg died in 1919. After he died, Alice's status was sometimes "widow."

Alice O'Hara, Hospital Nurse, was a Boarder at the home of William F. Schratz at the time of the 1920 census.

The 1930 census finds Allice O'Hara, 49, Hospital Nurse, the mother-in-law of the head of household, William Booth. His wife was Margaret, age 25, and they had a daughter, Allice, age 2. Margaret was the daughter of Alice G. O'Hara. They lived on Mathilda Street, Pittsburgh.

In 1940, Hospital Nurse, Alice G. O'Hara, a widow, age 58, was a lodger at the Booth home. At that time, William Booth was a widower and his daughter, Alice M., was 12.

The Death Certificate for Margaret Beatrice Booth indicates she was born about 1905 and she died of Eclampsia on April 11, 1932, at the age of 27. Her parents were Alice O'Hara, born in Blossburg, and Clem Hackenberg, born in Pittsburgh.

According to her Death Certificate, Alice G. O'Hara, a widow, died at Shadyside Hospital, Allegheny County, on November 17, 1954. The record says she was born in Pennsylvania on January 14, 1882. Her parents are not named. She is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Her death notice is almost illegible, but names her granddaughter, Alice Marie Booth Franz.
