Class of 1914
A news article about the Class of 1914 states that this graduate was "Emma E. O'Donnell, Herman, Pa."
Emma E. O'Donnell, born in October 1889, is first found in the 1900 Federal Census of Summit, Butler County, Pennsylvania, with her family. Her parents were Felix G. O'Donnell (1846-1922), born in Pennsylvania, and Mary A. [Landgraf, per death record] (1860-1936), born in Germany. In 1900, Mrs. O'Donnell had given birth to 9 children and all were living.
In The Pittsburgh Chapter, American Red Cross: A History of the Activities of the Chapter from Its Organization to January 1, 1921...., Emma E. O'Donnell is named as a Supervisor at the Public Health Nursing Association. Among the nursing staff of this aspect of the Red Cross, were a number of St. Francis nurses, including Ida E. Schmidt of the Class of 1914.
At the time of the 1920 census, Miss Emma O'Donnell was living on Fifth Avenue, Pittsburgh, with fellow 1914 graduate, Mary Herman, and two Schmidt sisters, one of whom, given name not stated, was probably Ida Schmidt, also from the class of 1914. Miss M. Herman, 26, was a nurse in an office, and Miss Emma O'Donnell was a nurse in Public Health. The Schmidt sister who was a nurse worked in private practice.
In 1922, Emma E. O'Donnell is named in a news article about the Pittsburgh Division, Public Health Nursing. At that time, she was at the McKees Rocks sub-station.
When Emma's father, Felix O'Donnell, died on May 5, 1922, Emma McLaughlin was the informant on her father's death certificate. Emma's mother, Mary A. O'Donnell, died on March 6, 1936 in New Kensington, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. At the time of her death, she had been a resident of 424 Keystone Drive. The death information was provided by Edward M. McLaughlin. His wife was Emma O'Donnell, and they lived at Keystone Drive, where they are found in both the 1930 and 1940 census records.
Emma O'Donnell must have married Edward M. McLaughlin not long before her father died in 1922.
In the 1930 census, Edward and Emma had a son, Rodger, age 4, as well as twin boys, Robert and Richard, age 1. They owned their home and reported they were both 35 when they married, but she was probably a bit younger. Edward worked for Ford Motor Company. In 1940, Edward was an insurance agent.
Edward M. McLaughlin died in 1969. (Emma's surname is misstated in his obit.) Born October 25, 1889, Emma died on October 1, 1981.
