Class of 1915
A news article about the St. Francis graduating Class of 1915 states that this graduate was "Catharine E. Noel, Loretto, Pennsylvania." Apparently, her name was Eleanor Catherine Noel.
Eleanor Noel, 22, was the head of household in the 1910 census of Munster, Cambria County, Pennsylvania. Living with her were her siblings Gerald, May, Ruth and Louis, all born in Pennsylvania. The father, Michael Noel, died in 1904, and the mother died in in 1907.
Harrisburg Daily Independent, Nov 25, 1904: "Michael J. Noel, for twenty-two years a resident of this city, and an employee of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, died last Tuesday at Munster. He was buried to-day from St. Michael's Church, Loretto. Mr. Noel was 40 years old and was only lately promoted to passenger conductor. He had to stop work immediately after his promotion. In July he went to the White Haven sanitarium for consumptives. He died at his farm near Munster."
Altoona Mirror, December 11, 1907: "MRS. MARY NOEL, Widow of Michael Noel, died at her home in Munster, Cambria county, yesterday of consumption, aged 47 years. Mrs. Noel's husband, who died three years ago of consumption, was for years a brakeman on the Middle division of the Pennsylvania railroad and was known to many Altoona railroadmen. She is survived by six children, the oldest aged 20 and the youngest aged 4 years. The funeral will take place on Thursday morning, with requiem mass in the Catholic church at Loretto."
Eleanor C. Noel was elected secretary of the St. Francis Nurses' Alumnae in 1916.
She served in the U. S. Army Nurse Corps during World War I.
Eleanor married Bernard McGroarty in Cuyahoga County, Ohio on August 21, 1924. He, too, served in the U. S. Army during World War I.
By 1940, Bernard and Eleanor had one child, a son, Bernard A., 15.
Bernard V. McGroarty died May 3, 1950.
Eleanor Catherine Noel McGroarty, born August 18, 1887, died on July 15, 1973 at Parma, Cuyahoga County, Ohio.
