MINKEL Cdr. Eva Marie Minkel, (MSC), USN, Ret., 95, of Penney Farms, FL passed away Saturday, July 9, 2011. She died peacefully at her residence in Penney Retirement Community of natural causes. Born Oct. 14, 1915 in Langeloth, PA. to John S. and Stella H. Minkel, she was the eldest of siblings, Emily M. Bush and William M. Minkel, Sr. Eve was a 1937 graduate of St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsburgh, PA. She later attended George Washington University to become a registered nurse dietician. Eve entered the U.S. Navy Nurse Corp in 1939 and advanced with honor to Commander in the Womens Specialists section of the Medical Service Corps in her specialty of dietetics. Retirement in 1964 marked more than 25 years of active Navy service. Noteworthy is her hospital duty on the U.S.S. Samaritan serving in four battles during WWII. She received 4 stars and 5 medals during this period. She was a long time member of Resurrection Catholic Church in Jacksonvilles Arlington area and prior resident of the Atrium at Regency. Besides parents and siblings, she is predeceased by her dear niece Jean Minkel, nephew William M. Minkel, Jr. and close friend Cdr. George W. Christoffel, USN, Ret. She is survived and greatly adored by seven nieces and nephews, their offspring and several lifelong friends. Let us always be mindful of the needs of others was her exhortation and common practice. Among Eve's favorite charities are AmeriCares, Doctors Without Borders, and the USN Memorial Foundation to which a gift in her honor would be appreciated in lieu of flowers. A memorial will be held at Hagan Care Center in the Penney Farms Retirement Community at 1pm Thursday, July 21, 2011. Jacksonville's Corey-Kerlin Funeral Home, 940 Cesery Blvd. is assisting with cremation and funeral arrangements. Burial will be in the Minkel family gravesite at Holy Rood Cemetery, Westbury, N.Y. Eve will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by her loving niece, Amy B. Cowherd, family and friends.
