OBITUARY: Mary Helen Mahon, 82, of Lewistown, died Nov. 8, 2011, at Ohesson Manor.
She was born Nov. 29, 1929, in Altoona, the daughter of the late Richard and Helen (Delozier) McNally. Mary married William M. Mahon, Jr. on June 13, 1953 at Sacred Heart Church, Altoona, PA. He preceded her in death on Feb 19, 2000 after 46 years of marriage.
Mary is survived by her sons, William M. Mahon, III and his wife, Dr. Nancy (Ross) Mahon of State College, Timothy Mahon of Lewistown and Terry Mahon of Milroy. She is also survived by her grandchildren; Chloe, Christopher, Michaela and Elizabeth Mahon. She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Mahon in 1972 and brothers Richard R. and John J. McNally.
Mary graduated from Altoona Senior High School in 1947 and St. Francis General Hospital (School of Nursing) in 1952 in Pittsburgh.
She worked as a RN at Cresson State Hospital, Altoona General, J.C. Blair Huntington and F.W. Black Hospital. She was last employed by Lewistown Hospital as an RN in the emergency room, intensive-coronary care and recovery room.
Mary started the original “Candy Stripers” through Red Cross at Black’s Hospital. She was also a member of the American Red Cross.
Mary was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Lewistown, where she also was a member of the choir.
Per Mary’s wishes, her service will be private and at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park, Lewistown. Memorials may be made to Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 9 North Brown Street, Lewistown, PA 17044 Barr Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
