Mary L. McCaffrey, 19, was a student at the St. Francis School of Nursing at the time of the 1930 Federal Census. The census indicates that she and her father were born in Pennsylvania and her mother in Ireland.

She married James Owen Carraway on February 17, 1935 and they lived in Ardmore, Oklahoma. They had one son.

James O. Carraway died on May 27, 1938 at their home in Oklahoma. A news article, dated May 17, 1937, indicates that he was ill.

Her second husband was Charles F. Shields of Pittsburgh. According to their marriage license, Mary L. Caraway (the spelling she used), a nurse, residing in Youngstown, was born Mary Louise McCaffrey on December 21, 1909 in Pittsburgh. Her parents were Thomas McCaffrey and Margaret Deasy. She married Charles F. Shields in Pittsburgh on June 17, 1947.

Mary Louise died on May 9, 1978, and her husband died December 28, 1983. They are buried at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Allegheny County.
