ROSE HELEN MARKLEY

Class of 1929

Rose Helen Markley, born on September 4, 1883 in Pennsylvania, was the daughter of Dennis "Frank" Markley, born in Nova Scotia, and Mary Gilmartin.

Mr. Markley is mistakenly named Charles in the 1900 Federal Census of Cambria County, Pennsylvania.

In 1910, the family lived in Johnstown, Cambria County. The children of Dennis F. Markley, a steel mill laborer, and his wife in 1910 were Mary, 29, a grocery store clerk; Rose, 24; William, 23, Donald, 21.

Mrs. Mary Gilmartin Markley died of gangrene of her right hand, related to diabetes, on February 13, 1916.

Rose's older sister, Mary Frances Markley, graduated from the St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in 1916.

In 1920, Frank D. Markley, born in Nova Scotia, was a widower, with only daughter, Rose H., 34, in the home. Mr. Markley is listed as a laborer in a mill.

The father, "D. Frank Markley," died in Johnstown on June 25, 1927. He and his wife are buried at St. Columbas (Lower Yoder Cemetery) in Johnstown.

Rose's sister, Mary Frances Markley, died in 1953.

Rose Helen Markley's death occurred on March 13, 1975, after more than a month of suffering from burns sustained when her apartment caught fire on February 8, 1975.
