While a student nurse at St. Francis Hospital, Kathleen Maher served in the U.S., World War II Cadet Nursing Corps.

Kathleen was the daughter of John J. Maher and Catherine O'Leary. The family is found in the 1930 Federal Census, residents of New Castle, Pennsylvania. Kathleen's siblings were John J., Jr., Mary E., Helen L., Patricia, Dorothy, Robert E. and Miles E.

A news article, dated July 26, 1947 indicates that Misses, Helen and Kathleen Maher left for Houston, Texas. Kathleen "will continue the profession of nursing." When Helen got married in 1949, Kathleen's address was El Paso, Texas. Kathleen L. Maher, a Head Nurse, is also listed in the 1952 City Directory of El Paso.

Kathleen L. Maher, 35, married Cary J. MacMiller, 27, on February 24, 1961 in Los Angeles, California.

FATHER'S OBITUARY: New Castle News, Sep 20, 1961 - John J. Maher, 76, 615 W. Washington St., well known banker and civic leader, died today at 10:07 a.m. in New Castle Hospital. He had been ill for the past seven weeks. - Mr. Maher served for 50 years at at Citizens National Bank, retiring in 1951 as executive vice president. He also served 50 years on the Board of the New Castle Hospital. - Born in New Castle, Jan. 27, 1885, son of James and Catherine Hayes Maher, he married the former Catherine O'Leary, June 15, 1910. Mrs. Maher survives him. - A member of St. Mary Church and the Holy Name Society, he was also a member of Knights of Columbus, New Castle Council 512. - Surviving in addition to his wife are the children: John J. Maher, Tyler, Tex.; Mrs. Francis H. (Mary E.) Quinn, Houston, Tex.; Mrs. Paul D. (Helen L.) Nelson, Houston; Mrs. Cary J. (Kathleen L.) MacMiller, Santa Monica, Calif.; brothers, James A., Pittsburgh; Jerry L., New Castle; 34 grandchildren. A son, Miles Eugene, died in 1949.....

Since Mr. Maher was on the with New Castle Hospital, including the School of Nursing, why didn't Kathleen attend nursing school there?

Kathleen's brother, Robert Emmet Maher, died on February 10, 2017, at which time he was survived by Kathleen and her husband.

OBITUARY: KATHLEEN MAHER MACMILLER - March 14, 1925 - June 11, 2018 - Kathleen Maher MacMiller, resident of Encino since 1962, passed away on Monday, June 11, 2018. Daughter of John Joseph and Catherine Veronica Maher, she was born in New Castle, Pennsylvania, the seventh of eight children. She graduated from St. Francis Medical Center School of Nursing in Pittsburgh and moved to CA where she worked in the nursery at St. John's Hospital. During her years at St. John's, she took time off to work as a baby nurse for the Minelli family and had a cameo role in the movie "Full of Life." Next, she worked in the nursery and NICU departments at Tarzana Medical Center until the end of her nursing career. In her retirement, due to her love of gardening and beautiful things, she worked part time at Frank's Nurseries and Bloomingdales. She met Cary Joseph MacMiller in Santa Monica, CA, in 1958 and was married on February 24, 1961. Predeceased by her siblings, she leaves behind her husband of 57 years, 4 children, Cary (Amber) MacMiller Jr., Katy (Greg) Greenwood, John MacMiller and Jim (Alyssa) MacMiller, and 9 grandchildren, William, Emily, Shane, Alex, Kirby, Ian, Wesley, Erin and Megan. Her guidance, support and laughter, as well as the smell of fresh baked desserts, will be missed by all. A Funeral Mass will be offered on Friday, June 22, 2018 at 10am at St. Cyril of Jerusalem Church, 15520 Ventura Blvd., Encino, CA 91436.
