HILDA KIST GORDON

Class of 1918

At the time of the 1900 Federal Census of Johnstown, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, Hilda Kist lived with her parents, Michael and Brigitta Kist, both born in Germany. Her siblings were Clara, Frances A., Michael J., and Victor. By 1910, all but Frances were still at home.

In 1920, Hilda Kist, a nurse for a private family, lived on South Millvale Avenue, Pittsburgh. Veronica Gleason, also in the Class of 1918, lived at the same address.

Hilda Kist married Raymond Gordon, and they had a daughter, Marianne, in 1930. They made their home in Sewickley, Allegheny County.

FATHER'S OBITUARY: Johnstown Tribune, February 4, 1924 -- Michael Kist, former Ninth Ward Councilman, died yesterday morning at his home, 132 Coal street, in his 77th year. He was the son of Anton and Frances. Kist was born at Baden Germany, October 7, 1847. Twenty years later he came to Johnstown and located in Old Conemaugh Borough, where he engaged in the contracting business and was active until 13 years ago. Michael Kist was for a number of years the Treasurer of Conemaugh Borough and during the term of the late Dr. George W. Wagoner as Mayor of the city he was a member of Common Council from the Ninth Ward. During the term of the late Hon. L. D. Woodruff as Mayor Mr. Kist served in Select Branch. - The deceased is survived by his widow, Mrs. Brigitta (Freidhoff) Kist, to whom he was married at St. Joseph's German Catholic Church in 1870, when the church stood near the corner of Singer and Huber streets. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Father Gregory, deceased, of the Benedictine Order. The surviving children are Anthony, of Boyd avenue; Catherine, wife of Urban Long, McKinney avenue; Frances, wife of John Boitz, Gautier street; Victor, Thomas avenue; Hilda, wife of Raymond Gordon, Pittsburg, and Clara and Michael Jr., both at home. Michael Kist was a member of Branch 15, Knights of St. George, and of St. Joseph's Society. - Funeral services will be held tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock in St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery at Geistown.

Raymond Gordon died suddenly in 1955.
