OBITUARY

Mary Hanlin Havrilla Retired VA Nursing Administrator

Mary Havrilla, 75, 5200 Henderson Road, died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002.

She was born Aug. 10, 1927, in Erie, daughter of the late John J. and Cecelia G. Ross Hanlin. She formerly lived at 3937 Briggs Ave. and 3927 Lake Pleasant Road.

She retired as chief of nursing services at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Butler. She formerly worked for Great Lakes Rehabilitation Hospital and was an administrator with four California hospitals.

She graduated from the Mercyhurst Seminary. She received nursing degrees from St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing and San Francisco State University. She also attended graduate school at San Francisco State and Texas Women's University.

She served in the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II.

She served as president of the Presque Isle chapter for the National Association of Retired Federal Workers. She was named Federal Supervisor of the Year in 1983 and Federal Woman of the Year in 1984 by the VA hospital system. She was also honored by HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Erie for 50 years of dedication to the nursing profession.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Havrilla, in 1975; and a brother, Patrick Morton Hanlin.

Survivors include a son, Robert Gregory Havrilla Sr. of Pittsburgh; a brother, John J. Hanlin Jr. and his wife, Tesse, of Chaumont, N.Y.; a sister-in-law, Mary Hanlin of Erie; a grandson, Robert Gregory Havrilla Jr.; a great-granddaughter; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Friends may call today from 2 to 4 p.m. at A. Brugger & Sons Funeral Home, Pine Avenue Branch, 845 E. 38th St.

Burial will be private at Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery.
