Part-time VA Nurses Win Long Battle For Full Pensions

OBITUARY: Mary Ann Mackin, 86, born Marianna DeRosa on December 23, 1935 in Scottdale, PA, passed away peacefully in her home in Forest Hills, PA in the presence of family on May 26, 2022. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 54 years, John Thomas Mackin; as well her siblings, Patrick, Angelina, Francesca, Concetta, and Michael. Loving mother of Maria (Declan) Walsh and Elizabeth (Steve) Karas; cherished grandmother of Collette Walsh, Betty Walsh, Seamus Walsh and Ava Karas. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and other extended family. MaryAnn was a proud graduate of Scottdale High School and St. Francis nursing college. She worked as a psychiatric nurse at the Veterans Hospital Administration on Highland Drive from 1958 to 2004. Mary Ann was the driving force behind the restoration of pensions to ALL part-time nurses throughout VA system after an arduous 20-year legal battle with the U.S. government. She was instrumental in changing the lives of nurses all over the United States. Toward the end of her life, she enjoyed spending time with friends and family and continued to be a devout practicing Catholic. Friends received Tuesday, 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm, at the THOMAS L. NIED FUNERAL HOME, INC., 7441 Washington Street, Swissvale, PA. Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday 10 a.m. in Word of God Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Saint Joseph the Worker Parish in Pittsburgh (sjwpitt.org).

HUSBAND'S OBITUARY: John T. Mackin, of Forest Hills, died Monday, May 13, 2013. Mr. Mackin was born to Sarah Sheekey and James Mackin in a home his grandfather built in Forest Hills, in the neighborhood where John lived his entire life. He attended St. James School in Wilkinsburg and graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1950. After graduation, he joined the Marine Corps and was given a military assignment on the USS Baltimore. After an honorable discharge, he married Mary Ann DeRosa Aug. 23, 1958, in Scottdale. John became a CPA in 1967 and graduated from Duquesne University in 1973. He worked for the Pitt Des Moines Inc. for 25 years until his retirement in 2000. He was a member of the Word of God Parish (St. Anselm's), a member of the Knights of Columbus and enjoyed swimming at the Wilmerding YMCA, gardening and monthly PDM and Central lunches with old friends. He was the beloved husband of 54 years to Mary Ann DeRosa Mackin; the loving father of Maria Mackin and her husband, Declan Walsh, of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Elizabeth Mackin Karas and her husband, Steve, of Forest Hills; the dear granddad to Collette, Betty Jane and Seamus Walsh and Ava Karas. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the THOMAS L. NIED FUNERAL HOME INC., 7441 Washington St., Swissvale. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday morning in the St. Anselm Roman Catholic Church.
