ANNA ELIZABETH CASINKO JOHNSON

Class of 1928

Anna Elizabeth Casinko, Class of 1928, and Mary Cecelia Casinko, Class of 1925, were sisters.

At the time of the 1910 Federal Census of Derry, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, Mike Kozanko, 43, was married to Lizzie, 27, his wife (second) of 8 years. She said she had 5 living children. It is known that at least Margaret, born in 1896, was not her child; her mother was Mary Hajas, per Margaret's obituary. In this 1910 census, the children were Margaret, 13, John, 7, Mary, 5, Annie, 4, George, 3, and Mike, 1.

Mrs. Elizabeth Kozanko, maiden name Warjosko, wife of Mike, died of cancer on December 20, 1919, according to her death certificate.

The Social Security Application of St. Francis graduate, Anna Elizabeth Casinko, indicates that her parents were Mike Kozenko and Elizabeth Vargosko (a variation of the aforementioned "Warjosko"). She further stated that she was born on November 21, 1905. From the Social Security Record: "Nov 1936: Name listed as ANNA ELIZABETH KOZENKO CASINKO; Dec 1965: Name listed as ANNA ELIZABETH JOHNSON; : Name listed as ANNA CASINKO JOHNSON; 31 Dec 1987: Name listed as ANNA JOHNSON"

In 1920, widower, Mike Kozenko, a coal miner born in Galicia, is found in Bradenville, Westmoreland County with his children. They were: John, 17, Mary, 16, Annie, 14, George, 12, Mike, 10, Charley, 8, Joe, 6, Adam, 4, and Verna [Veronica], 1.

In the 1930 census, Anne E. Casinko, 24, born in Pennsylvania, was living in Cleveland, Ohio and was employed as a private duty nurse.

In 1940, Anna E. Casinko, 34, a roomer in Latrobe, Westmoreland County, was employed as "Industrial Nurse - Explosive." She indicated she had also lived there in 1935.

The sisters are found in the online 1940-1941 list of Pennsylvania Registered Nurses, published by the State Board of Nursing:

  • Mary Cecelia Casinko, 637 City County Bldg., Pittsburgh.
  • On July 3, 1943, in Richmond, Virginia, Anna Elizabeth Casinko, 36, born in Latrobe, Pa., daughter of Michael Casinko and Elizabeth Vargosko, married U. S. Army serviceman, John Anton Johnson, 32, born in Butler, Pa.

    In 1950 when John A. Johnson applied for Veteran Compensation for his service in World War II, he said he was a resident of Latrobe at the time he entered the service. In 1950, he lived in Derry, Westmoreland County.

    John Anton Johnson, born on February 13, 1911, died of a stroke on October 21, 1960. On his death certificate, his wife is stated as Anna Cozenko Johnson; she was the informant. He is buried at St. Mary's Cemetery, Latrobe.

    Anna Casinko Johnson died in March 1980.
