MARY A. CASEY

Class of 1928

Mary A. Casey, born January 28, 1906 (per baptismal record), was the daughter of Michael and Ellen Casey, both born in Ireland, and residents of Mahoning County, Ohio by 1900. That year they were the parents of Thomas, Margaret M., Ellen T., and Peter R., all born in Ohio. A couple doors away was the Lydon/Lydan family, and Margaret Casey later married Patrick Lydon/Lyden.

Michael Casey was deceased at the time of the 1910 census, and Ellen, called "Ella" in the record, was left with her children, Thomas, Margaret, Ellen, Emmet, Mary and Patrick. Daughter, Mary, was four at that time. An older couple, Michal and Mary Casey, probably the parents of the deceased Mr. Casey, lived in part of the same house.

Ellen still lived next to her in-laws in 1920, and her children still at home were Helen, Emmet, Mary and Patrick. Mary was 13 in 1920, and she would have gone to nursing school after high school.

In 1930, Mary A., 24, a trained hospital nurse, was living with her mother, Ellen, and siblings, Emmet M., 28, and Patrick A., 22, on Rosemont Avenue, Wickcliffe, Austintown Township, Mahoning County.

By 1940, Mary and her mother were residing in the same general vicinity with the Patrick and Margaret Lydon family. Mary was working as a nurse, Government Relief.

Based on the news articles that follow, Mary entered the Army in 1945. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs Deaths, she enlisted June 22, 1945 and served through May 3, 1949. The record states she was born January 28, 1910 and died October 29, 1982. She was actually born in 1906. Did Mary Casey change her birth year in order to qualify for service? If not a clerical error, then probably. She is found in the Social Security Death Index with the correct birth year. She died in North Carolina.
