BRIDGET ELIZABETH BURNS

Bridget Elizabeth Burns was born on October 15, 1918 in Johnstown, Cambria County, Pennsylvania. Her parents were Daniel Timothy Burns (1884-1960), and Elizabeth E. Rodgers (1888-1949), both born in Johnstown.

At the time of the 1920 Federal Census, the children of Mr. and Mrs. Burns were Hester A., Donald T., and Bridget E. In 1940, they had two more sons, William and Robert. Mr. Burns was a machinist in the steel mill.

Meanwhile, Bridget Elizabeth had graduated from nursing school in 1939. She is found in the 1940 census of Washington, District of Columbia, as a "New Worker Nurse." She was living with her sister, Hester, married to Joseph Cavanaugh. The census record indicates that she had been living in Johnstown in 1935.

Bridget E. Burns of Herschberger St., Johnstown, Pa., completed unspecified advanced training at Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital in May 1944. This card is found with the World War II Cadet Nursing Corps files.

Bridget Elizabeth Burns eventually worked at the Veterans' Hospital in Pittsburgh. She died April 12, 1990 and is buried in Saint John Gualbert Roman Catholic Cemetery, Johnstown. Her parents and other family members are also buried there.

OBITUARY: Pittsburgh Press, April 13, 1990 - Bridget E. Burns, 71, retired [1974] chief nurse at the Veterans' Outpatient Clinic of Pittsburgh, died of respiratory arrest yesterday in Presbyterian-University Hospital. - Miss Burns of Oakland, who was a member of St. Paul Cathedral in Oakland, leaves a brother, William of Tonawanda, N. Y. - Friends may call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at Picking Treece Bennett Mortuary, Johnstown. - Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Monday at St. John Gualbert Cathedral, Johnstown. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
