Biographical Sketch

Helen F. Brede, born about 1899 in Altoona, Blair County, Pennsylvania, was the daughter of Martin and Frances (Bumgartner) Brede. Mr. Brede emigrated from Besse, Hesse-Kassel, Germany and settled in Altoona in 1871. He was a stonecutter and worked on the construction of St. Luke's Episcopal and St. John's Catholic churches before going to work for the railroad in 1883. Mrs. Brede died about 1916 and he retired in 1919.

Helen's siblings were Henry, Edward, and Frank. In 1920, Edward and his family were living with Martin. Helen is listed as a student nurse. Frank lived in Pittsburgh.

The 1930 Census of Altoona City, lists Helen, a hospital nurse, age 31, living with her father.

Martin Brede died in October 20, 1937 at his home at 2431 Fifth Avenue, Altoona.

The obituary of David A. Breckbill, dated April 5, 1983, in the Tyrone Daily Herald (PA), states that Mr. Breckbill had married Miss Helen Brede at Altoona on June 12, 1945. It further states that Helen Brede Breckbill died in 1949.

According to David's obituary, he and Helen had no children.
