ELIZABETH MARY BECK

Class of 1920

This woman is likely the St. Francis graduate, but no supporting news articles or records have been found that link her conclusively to the school of nursing at St. Francis.

Elizabeth Mary Beck was found as "Mary E. Beck" in the 1900 Federal Census of Butler, Butler County, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Sebastian Beck, a farmer, and Margaret "Maggie" Pistorius, both born in Pennsylvania. The children in 1900 were Catharin, 15, Alle P. (Aloysius), 14, Carl J., 12, Mary E., 11, Augustus F., 8, Patronella F. (Ella), 6, Gertrude M., 4, and Edward J., 2. The census record indicates that "Mary E." was born in May 1889.

The father, Sebastian Beck, born in 1850 in Butler County, died there on August 8, 1907. In his will, he refers to Elizabeth Mary as "Lizzie M. Beck." Apparently, Catherine "Katie" had become a nun, Sister Paul.

In 1910, Margaret Beck lived in Butler with five of her children - Carl J., Elizabeth, Augustus, Ella, and Gertrude.

Margaret is not named in the 1920 census with her mother. Only two sisters, Ella and Gertrude, lived with the mother at that time. Margaret Beck, 30, born in Pennsylvania, and her parents born in Pennsylvania, is listed in the 1920 census as a student nurse at St. Francis, and resided at the St. Francis Hospital Nurses' Residence.

Elizabeth M. Beck, 40, was living with her mother at the time of the 1930 census. Also in the home was Elizabeth's brother, Carl, and her sister, Gertrude. Elizabeth was a nurse for a private family.

The mother, Margaret Pistorius Beck, supposedly born in 1854, died in February 1934.

The 1940 census finds Elizabeth, Gertrude and Carl living together. Elizabeth is a "Registered Nurse, Nursing." For some reason, she is not listed in the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing licensees for 1940-1941.

Per Death Certificate: Born on May 14, 1889, Elizabeth M. Beck, Registered Nurse, died of Congestive Heart Failure on November 11, 1963 at the age of 74. - She and other family members are buried at St. Peters Cemetery, Butler.
