Mary O. Averman, born May 9, 1921, was the daughter of Walter Averman, a salesman, born in Pittsburgh, and Bernice Dingfelder, born in Charleston, South Carolina.

In Pittsburgh, on November 10, 1942, Mary O. Averman, Nurse, married Army Technical Sergeant Edward Maurice Shanahan, a soldier, age 20, born in Pittsburgh, and a resident of Penn Avenue, stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was the son of Patrick Joseph Shanahan and Margaret Mary Kirby, both born in Ireland.

Edward Maurice Shanahan, Sergeant major, U. S. Army, served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. He received the Purple Heart. Born on June 18, 1922, he died November 10, 1993 in Zelienople, Butler County. He is buried at Saint Gregory Cemetery, Zelienople.

OBITUARY: Mary Othelia Shanahan, 96, of Zelienople passed away on Tuesday while under the care of Passavant Retirement Community. - Born May 9, 1921, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Walter B. Averman and Bernice Dingfelder Averman. - Mary graduated from the St. Francis School of Nursing in 1942 and was proud to be a Golden Alumni Member. She was a registered nurse at Passavant Health Center in Zelienople until retirement. - Mary was a faithful member of St. Gregory Roman Catholic Church, where she was involved in the women's choir and the St. Ann's Guild. - She also enjoyed line dancing, was a member of the Keenagers, and was a past treasurer of the local AARP Chapter 3002. - Mary is survived by her six children, Edward P. (Rex) Shanahan of Hawaii, Marymargaret "Peg" (Robert Boyd Horton) Shanahan of Santa Fe, N.M. and Boulder, Colo., Timothy G. (Ellen) Shanahan of Louisville, Colo., Kathleen A. (James) Druschel of Zelienople, Michael K. (Melissa) Shanahan of Boulder, Colo., and Patrick J. (Linda) Shanahan of New Orleans, La.; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Phyllis Rosenberger of Bethel Park. - In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Edward M. Shanahan; two brothers, Walter and Martin Averman; and a sister, Dorothy Profeta.

SHANAHAN - Friends of Mary Othelia Shanahan, who died Tuesday, June 6, 2017, will be received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Boylan Funeral Home, 324 E. Grandview Ave., Zelienople. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Gregory Catholic Church, 2 W. Beaver St., Zelienople, with Father Jim Young, celebrant. She will be laid to rest at St. Gregory Catholic Cemetery in Zelienople. - Memorial contributions may be made in Mary's honor to the Passavant Benevolent Fund/LAS Foundation, 105 Burgess Drive, Zelienople, PA 16063.
