He died in OCT 1818 in Wayne Twp, Greene Co, PA. Western PA tax records show William living there as early as 1784. Their farm on Dunkard Creek in Greene Co was called "Plum Tree". In the name of God amen, I William Goddard of Wayne Township, Green Co, Pa. A farmer being in perfect health and of a sound mind and memory, thanks be given unto God calling into mind the mortality of my body and knowing it is appointed of all men to die, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament, that is to say principally and first of all, I give and recommend my soul into the hand of Allmighty God that give it and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in a decent Christian burial at the descretion of my executors, nothing doubting but at the general resurrection, I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God and as touching such worldly estate therewith it pleased God to bless me in this life, I give, divise and dispose of in the following manner and form -- First, I give and bequeath to my beloved wife, Elizabeth all my worldly estate during her natural life and at her decease to be divided as follows -- Item-- I give and bequeath to my well beloved son Henry Kallins Goddard One dollar currency money to be levy'd out of my estate one year and one day after my and his Mother's decease to him, his heirs, and assigns forever. He died in 1878 in Fanin Co, TX. pg 131 Oct 1996 TCR Jared Nelson Goddard was born in Greene Co, PA, son of Henry Kellum Goddard and Dorcas Long. On 16 MAY 1828, Jared married Martha (Patty) Garner, daughter of Joshua Garner and Polly Yoho. They were the parents of 8 children: Cornelius, Samuel, Joshua, Thomas, John, Mary, Alice Rachel, and James Patterson. Sometime after 1845, Jared Nelson Goddard supposedly traded his harm for a horse and left the area, heading West, leaving behind his wife and children. Next it appears that he married a woman by the name of Sarah Frost. They are found in Richmond, OH with a daughter Jane, B 1845 VA and a son, Joseph, born in OH in 1847. Richmond, OH is about 12 miles from Cincinnate. In 1853, Jared and family are found in Athens, Missouri. However, Sarah dies nine days after their arrival. In August 1854, Jared Nelson Goddard married Nancy Hardesty Cummings Lemaster. Nancy was born in Belmont Co, OH on 31 MAY 1819. They moved to Croton, Iowa to the farm which Nancy had inherited from her second marriage. They had three children: Leander, Samuel, and Rebecca. Jared Nelson Goddard enlisted in Co C, 37th Infantry of the Iowa Volunteers ("Graybeards") on 15 DEC 1862, at the age of 53 years. He held the position of Private, Corporal and Second Corporal. His military record describes him as 5'8" tall, dark complexion, hazel eyes and hair mixed. He mustered out 24 MAY 1865 at Davenport, Iowa. It has been told that toward the end of the war, Jared, either by letter or when he was home on furlough for a week in the fall of 1864, asked Nancy to sell the farm in Croton and he would use the proceeds to either rent or buy a farm somewhere else. Nancy did as he asked and mailed the deed to him for his signature. She then moved to Keokuk, Iowa to wait for Jared to come home. When Jared was discharged from the war, he took the train as far as Montrose, Iowa and walked the remaining twelve miles home. He arrived in the evening and stayed only a few days and then left, asking Nancy for a little bit of money so he could "hunt up a farm". Nancy never heard from him again and neither did any of the children. Over the years, several rumors were heard of Jared's whereabouts. One story had him returning to Cincinnati. Another had him seen in Kentucky. Perhaps the most interesting story was told to Nancy's son, Peter Lemaster, by a man known to the family as "Doc" Kennedy. He had a patent on a brick machine and traveled all over the country. He told Peter that when he was in West Virginia, he had heard Jared had been murdered there as a result of informing on moonshiners. The big mystery is -- what really happened to Jared Nelson Goddard? Well, the truth is, he returned to West Virginia after the Civil War and remarried his first wife, Martha (Patty) Garner on 1 JAN 1874. Both of their marriages, 1st in 1828 and 2nd in 1874, are on record in Ohio and Marshall Cos, WV. So, forty-six years after their first marriage and approximately thirty years after leaving Martha behind, Jared returned to West Virginia to his first family. What a shock that must have been! Apparently not long after they were remarried, this couple moved out West, as Martha (Patty) Garner Goddard died in 1886 in OK and Jared is supposed to have died in TX, date not known. Most of Jared and Martha's children moved West, too, living in Texas, Oklahoma, Indiana, and Colorado. What happened to Nancy Hardesty Cummings Lemaster Goddard? She spent her remaining years living with some of her children, until her death at the age of 81. She is buried next to many of her children and Hardesty family members. This copule started out their married life in Wetzel Co, but eventually went West, living for a while in Indiana, but later settling in Missouri. He died on 22 FEB 1907 in Tangier, IN. Henry K Goddard II and his wife Margaret Paugh moved to the state of Indiana. Their children married into the following known families: Anderson, Allspaugh, and Goddard. Henry K Goddard II died 22 FEB 1907 in Tangier, IN. On his death certificate, his father's birthplace is listed as on the Atlantic Ocean. Editor's note: It is this statement, among others, that has led me to search the Maryland-Delaware area for the roots of my Goddard family. I might also add that Henry's wife's surname has also been listed as Rush. Their Tyler Co, VA marriage record shows the name Paugh. pg 132 Oct 1996 TCR 15. Martha Goddard was born on 14 APR 1821 in PA. She died on 10 NOV 1894 in Proctor, Wetzel Co, WV. She was buried in Antioch Cem, Proctor Dist, Wetzel Co, WV. Martha Goddard and Harrison Yoho stayed in the Wetzel Co area. Harrison was a well-known preacher and was involved with the founding of the Palestine Christian Church on Proctor Creek. Their children married into the following known families: Garloch, Laflen, and Goddard. Martha Goddard and husband, Harrison Yoho, are both buried in the cemetery at Antioch Christian Church near Proctor, WV pg 133 Oct 1996 TCR She was married to Harrison Yoho (son of George Washington Yoho and Jane Hartley) on 22 MAR 1838 in Tyler Co, VA.3 Harrison Yoho was born on 16 NOV 1816 in Paugh Rdg, Tyler Co, VA. He died on 4 APR 1895 in Halls Mill, Wetzel Co, WV. died at the home of his son, Henry, according to his obit He was buried in Antioch Cem, Proctor Dist, Wetzel Co, WV. Harrison Yoho was a farmer and minister. He married many couples in Wetzel Co and was a circuit rider for the Christian Church in the area of Hall's Mill. Had a farm near Hall's Mill on what is now Route 7 in the vincinity of Wileyville. Martha Goddard and Harrison Yoho had the following children: +77 i. Matilda Martha Yoho. +78 ii. Alexander Goddard and his family also moved to the state of Indiana, Putnam Co, to be specific. No info has been found on the children of his 1st marriage, other than their names, daughters, Mary J., Dorcas J., and Nancy C. I have no marriage data on them. Alexander's 2nd wife was Martha J. Lumpkins who was born in Indiana. Their children married into the following families: Goddard, Bugg, Hendricks, Evans, Merritt, and Nanni. Most remained in the state of Indiana. pg 133 Oct 1996 TCR 17. Matilda Goddard was born on 25 OCT 1824 in VA. Matilda Goddard and Rolla Booth remained in the Marshall-Wetzel Co area. their oldest son, John Jefferson Booth, married Hannah Himelrick, and they lived in Hundred, WV. Other known children of Matilda and Rolla were: Dorcas S., James A., Elizabeth J., Isaac M., and Hannah Puliona. Joanna Goddard and Caleb Hill were married in Tyler Co in 1838. It is known they had twin daughters. EDITOR'S NOTE: Until just a few months ago, no info had been found on where Joanna Goddard and Caleb Hill had settled after leaving the tri-county area. With the help of the Goddard Association of America (based in Wichita, KS), a descendant was discovered living in the state of Washington. Correspondence with her has shed new light on this family. C, 15th WV Infantry, on 20 Aug 1862, and served a full term of three years, receiving discharge at close of the war on 14 Jun 1865. He was permanently injured in the service. His father, Eli Pyles, enlisted in Co. H, lst WV Infantry, in 1861, and served for eighteen months, five months of which he was a prisoner. He was discharged for disability, occasioned by a fever sore contracted while in prison. Oliver Pyles, brother of Michael, served for three years in the company with their father, and a half-brother, John Wesley Rucker, was a soldier for two years in the 2nd Iowa Cavalry. Mrs. Mary Ann Miner Baker, widow of the late John Baker, died at her home on Games Ridge Thursday afternoon at 2:30. A life resident of this county, she was 87 years old and the mother of eight children now living. Thirty-eight grandchildren and 37 great grandchildren also survive. Death terminated an illness of some five weeks duration and was attributed to a complication of ailments incident to old age. Her husband died 22 years ago. Surviving are the following children; Mrs. J. R. Richmond, Roberts Ridge; Mrs. F. T. O'Neil, Morristown, O.; Mrs. F. L. Roberts, Bowman Ridge; Mrs. T. O.
